KOBANI, Syrian Kurdistan,— Islamic State IS group extremists
have launched an attack on the Syrian border Kurdish town of Kobani from Turkey
side, a first in the ongoing siege, a Kurdish official and activists say.

At least 30 people
were killed in clashes between Kurdish fighters and militants of IS group in
Kobani, near the Turkish border, after the militants detonated two suicide
bombs Saturday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The
Observatory, which relies on a network of informants on the ground, said that
at least 21 IS militants were among those killed. “At least 90 shells have been
fired by militants of IS since this morning,” the Observatory said.

A Kurdish official in
Kobani also told AP on Saturday that militants had opened a new front in their
assault on the town and were now attacking it from across the border in Turkey.

Nawaf Khalil, a
spokesman for Syria's Kurdish Democratic Union Party, says Islamic State group
militants in Turkey attacked the border crossing point that links the country
to Kobani, Syrian Kurdistan, AP reported. The attack on the post separating
Kobani from Turkey was followed by fierce clashes between Kurdish and IS
fighters."Clashes broke out for the first time in the area after two
jihadist attacks at dawn on the border post separating Turkey and Kobane,"
said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights
monitoring group.

One suicide attacker
blew up an explosive-packed car, and another detonated a suicide-bomb belt,
according to the Britain-based Observatory. A vehicle exploded at about 5
o’clock Saturday morning after crossing from Turkey into Kobani in Syrian
Kurdistan, Firat news agency reported. The bomb-laden vehicle passed the Mursitpinar
border gate before blowing up. Islamic State IS group militants based in the
Turkish state agricultural depot (TMO) are continuing to attack Kobani from
three sides.

The Observatory said
the attackers had come from the Turkish side, something Turkish officials
denied.

There were
conflicting reports about whether the attackers came from the Syrian or Turkish
side of the border.

A Turkish official
confirmed that two explosions were heard "on the Syrian side of the
border."

The IS militants are
based around TMO wheat silos very close to the Mürşitpınar border gate, from
where they have launched attacks on Kobani. Fierce clashes are continuing on
the eastern, western and southern fronts in the city. Urfa Governor İzzettin
Küçük admitted to HDP MP Ibrahim Ayhan that the IS militants were on Turkish
territory and had attacked Kobani from there. “Fighting has broken out in the
south and northeast of the city and heavy weaponry is used in the fight,”
Brigadier Toufik Khazyavayi told Rudaw The Islamic State group began its Kobani
offensive in mid-September. The town later became the focus of airstrikes by
the U.S.-led coalition against the militants.
